SUMMARY. An ethyl ether extract of the fresh leaves and stems of Primula obconica was used to prepare “ready‐made” patch test units for routine testing of 2457 patients with dermatitis. The prepared patches could be stored wrapped in aluminium foil in a refrigerator for a minimum of 3 years without losing potency. Colour spot tests and gas chromatography were used to check the content of primin in the extract. In summer 11·1 % of the women and 1·7% of the men, and in winter 7·0% of the women and 2·3% of the men gave positive reactions. These seasonal variations were less pronounced than in the previous studies, probably because of the constant amount of primin in the tests used throughout the year. The method described is convenient and reliable and helps to avoid false negative or undesirably strong reactions.
