In order to mass‐scale rearing of coregonid (Coregonidae) larvae and juveniles for restocking purposes, the use of electric light for attraction of zooplankton was developed in Poland. The positive phototactic response in different groups of zooplankton was studied during cage culture experiments. An observation was conducted in three different environments (a pond, the eutrophic Lake Leginskie and the hypereutrophic Lake Mutek) in Northern Poland, to evaluate zooplankton concentration around the light source. The study gives information on changes in zooplankton densities, cumulation cycles, and interaction between planktonic organisms in and around illuminated cages. Particular zooplanktonic organisms varied strongly in different environments in their reaction to light. The water transparency may be responsible for some of these reactions. However, some evolutionary and behavioural patterns should be taken into account.
