Data from small rivers in Poland and Canada show that the accuracy of quantitative electro‐fishing in diverse fish communities is dependent on the size, density, behaviour and body shape of the fish. It is shown that in a non‐homogeneous, riverine fish community a more precise estimate of population size is obtained from a consideration of average weight of specimens, sample composition and quality, than by the use of catch‐effort statistical methods.
