Summary An electrophoretic survey of transferrin variants in 87 species of teleostean fishes showed much individual variation. The majority of the species were polymorphic at the transferrin gene locus, Tf. The clustered distribution of allelomorphs indicated some evolutionary continuity within certain taxonomic families, but this continuity was unexpectedly less apparent within genera.
