Summary Resolution of equine soluble malic enzyme phenotypes is greatly improved by isoelectric focusing as compared with starch gel electrophoresis. Phenotype differences can be recognized in plasma as well as haemolysates. The locus for soluble malic enzyme (ME1) is closely linked to the locus for Xk.
