Summary Starch gel electrophoresis of liver extracts of chickens revealed six regions, designated I to VI, of esterase activity. Three phenotypes, A, B and AB, were found in esterases in region I. These phenotypes were shown to be controlled by a pair of codominant autosomal alleles, Es ‐5 A and Es ‐5 B .
