Summary Following William Morton's demonstration of ether anaesthesia in the Massachusetts General Hospital in October 1846, the first major operation in the Old World is credited to Robert Liston at University College Hospital on 21 December 1846. It has been suggested that a similar operation took place in Dumfries on 19 December 1846. The existing evidence is reviewed and new evidence from newspapers and hospital annual reports is presented. This evidence does not support the Dumfries claim.
