Surgery to hyperbaric oxygen treatment (100% 0, at 2.5 ATA for 90 min; twice sessions for 6 days) or placebo (21% 0, at 1.1 ATA for 90 min; twice daily sessions for 6 days). All patients received the same standard therapies (anticoagulants, antibiotics and wound dressings). The two study groups (treatment group n = 16 ; placebo group: n = 15) were similar in terms of risk facton (diabetes mellitus, previous neurological deficit, peripheral vascular disease); number, type, or location of vascular injuries, neurological injuries, and fractures; Injury Severity Score; type, location, or timing ofsurgical procedures. Complete healing was obtained in 15 patients in the treatment group vs. seven patients in the placebo group (p < 0.005). A new surgical procedure (amputation, vascular surgery, skin flaps and grafh) was performed in one patient in the treatment group compared with six patients in the placebo group (p < 0.025). No sigtllficant differences were found between the two groups with regard to length of hospital stay and the number ofwound dressings.
