Summary The capacity to neutralise gastric acid was investigated in three over‐the‐counter paracetamol preparations. Panadol (Winthrop Laboratories) showed a buffering capacity equal to that of existing antacids because of the agents used to make it dissolve. This property, together with its mild analgesic action, widespread availability and palatability, may make it a useful agent, for acid aspiration prophylaxis.
