Summary Pretreatment with small doses of fentanyl (fO0 jig) or alfentanil (300 pg) was found significantly to reduce the induction dose of thiopentone. Fentany 150 μp and alfentanil 150 pg also signifcantly reduced the onset time and increased the consistency of action of midazolam. Respiratory depression was not a problem when 50 pg fentanyl or 150 pg alfentanil were used.
