Summary The introduction of chloroform into anaesthesia is described, together with an account of the parts played by Simpson and Waldie and their connexions with Liverpool. An account of the first chloroform anaesthetics administered in Liverpool is also given; David Waldie, who suggested the use of chloroform, was one of the administrators at the first demonstration.
