Summary Using a transcutaneous P co 2 ( P tcCO 2 ) electrode, arterial P co 2 ( P aco 2 ) was compared with P tcCO 2 in eight adults (seven patients, one normal subject) over a wide range of values of P aCO 2 (2.4 to 7.87 kPa). At an electrode temperature of 43°C, P tcCO 2 = 1.25 P aco 2 kPa (95% confidence limits: 0.60 kPa). Change in P tcCO 2 accurately reflected change in P aco 2 .
