Summary Pain caused by intravenous injection in the dorsum of the hand of ICI 35,868 and diazepam (Valium) was studied. The effect of pretreatment with intravenous aspirin was compared with two groups—one pretreated with fentanyl and an untreated group. In the case of diazepam neither analgesic drug prevented pain on injection whereas with ICI 35,868 pain was significantly reduced by both drugs.
