Summary Fifty‐three of 114 uncalibrated scavenging systems with open reservoirs had evacuation rates of less than 20 litres/minute. Analysis showed that there was no correlation between the number of hours in use since the date of the last service and the demonstrated change in effectiveness. Calibrated systems which can be continuously monitored have definite advantages.
