Summary A retrospective study of the causes of maternal mortality over the past 20 years in the National Maternity Hospital, Dublin, was undertaken. Anaesthesia contributed to 4.4% of all maternal deaths and to 5.7% of ‘true’ maternal deaths. In the last 10 years studied it did not contribute to maternal mortality. It was concluded that anaesthesia was not a major cause of maternal mortality in this hospital.
