Summary The effect of the addition of lignocaine or saline to etomidate was studied in a randomised, double‐blind trial involving 98 patients attending for day case surgery under general anaesthesia. The incidence of pain on injection of etomidate was significantly reduced by the addition oflignocaine in a strength of 1 mg/ml.
