Summary A method of avoiding postoperative confusion when local analgesic techniques are indicated for the elderly is described. Basal sedation using 0·8% chlormethiazole infusion intravenously, was employed. Mental function was not altered when the technique was used and it is suggested that the length of stay in hospital can be reduced.
