Anaesthesia as it is practised in a small urban hospital in Nepal has been described. The people of Nepal have great surgical needs, and good, simple, anaesthesia is vital. Surgery is demanding on time and space; is it as vital as an 'under-fives clinic' or a preventative medicine programme? As the staff of the Shining Hospital decreases and as the Government Hospital takes over more acute surgery, I do not think so, and thus I am, temporarily, happy to be involved in the control and treatment of tuberculosis.
