Observations on territory of the rainbow lizard, Agama agama

Summary Individually‐marked rainbow lizards, Agarna agarna (L.) were studied at Cape Coast, Ghana on two different but adjacent areas: one with little shelter but a good food supply (Botanic Garden) and the other with plenty of shelter but less food (North Side). Although the size of the territory within each of the two areas seemed to depend on the weight of the resident male lizard, the territorial density seemed to depend on a series of complex relationships between the quality of the habitat in terms of roosts and food, and social interactions between the lizards. Résumé Des agames arc‐en‐ciel ( Agarna agarna ) marqués individuellement ont étéétudiés à Cape Coast, au Ghana, dans deux zones différentes mais contigües: l'une avec peu d'abri mais un bon approvisionnement en nourriture (Jardin Botanique), l'autre avec beaucoup de zones couvertes mais moins de nourriture (North Side). Bien que la surface du territoire à l'intérieur de chacune des deux zones semble dépendre du poids du lézard mâle qui l'occupe, la densité territoriale semble dépendre d'une série de relations complexes entre la qualité de l'habitat (lieux privilégiés de nourriture) et les interactions sociales entre individus.
