Habitat exploitation by the bushbuck in Rwenzori National Park

Summary The bushbuck is a selective feeder, eating a wide range of plant species. In this study thirty‐five plants eaten by bushbuck were identified. These included three grass species, five shrub plants and twenty‐seven herbs. The shrubs Erythrococcus bongensis and Capparis tomentosa were favoured in all seasons, although herbs were preferred to shrubs in the wet season. The average percentage of crude protein and phosphorus content in plants was slightly higher in the wet season than in the dry season. Résumé Le guib harnaché est un consommateur sélectif, mangeant un large éventail d'espéces végétales. Au cours de cette étude, trente‐cinq espèces consommées par le guib harnaché furent identifiées parmi lesquelles trois espèces de grandes graminées, cinq espèces d'arbustes et vingt‐sept espèces d'herbages. Les arbustes Erythrococcus bongensis et Capparis tomentosa composent le régime préféré en toute saison, bien que les herbages soient préférés aux arbustes durant la saison des pluies. Le pourcentage moyen du contenu brut en protéines et en phosphore est 1égèrement plus élevé en saison des pluies qu'en saison èhe.
