Summary Oesophageal fistulas were surgically made in three wildebeest and two topi using a lateral, mid‐cervical approach through a sterno‐mastoideus splitting incision. Two different types of plugs were used to maintain the fistulas closed. Various complications which responded to individual care and treatment are described.
