S ummary In October, 1963 an attempt was made to rear a very young elephant calf, during which time numerous difficulties were encountered. The basic problem was the lack of any available notes and data from experiences of other attempts, which would have been invaluable to us. The following observations on diet and management, are taken from the detailed diary kept during the attempt to rear “Kasigau”, the young elephant referred to above, and also the well‐known “Eleanor”, for the benefit of those who may, one day, find themselves confronted with a helpless orphaned elephant and may wish to make an attempt at rearing it.
