Because of highway fatality rates in the United States most states have been recommended to enact a minimum legal drinking of age 21 years. Increases in the legal drinking age have been shown to be associated with significant short term decreases in the incidence of highway crashes and these continue as significant long term reductions at slightly smaller magnitudes. There is clear data that road traffic accident fatalities are unacceptably high in this age group in the United Kingdom. It is possible to enact legislation banning drinking and driving in this group but would it be socially acceptable.
