Summary Recent developments in world alcohol availability show a clear trend. Per capita consumption of alcohol shows a rapid increase in some of the developing countries while consumption levels in developed countries have remained stable. It is often implied that a major factor underlying the increased consumption in developing countries is increased imports from developed countries. This conception is challenged by analysing previously unused statistical data. In the light of the analysis, indigenous alcohol production is by far the major source of all alcohol consumed in developing countries.
