Summary This paper summarizes some of the key lessons learned from the World Health Organization project on Community Response to Alcohol‐Related Problems which was carried out in Mexico, Scotland and Zambia between 1976 and 1983. In particular, it presents some of the lessons learned about alcohol problems, methods of research, translating research into action and managing an international research project. It reflects the experiences of the two project managers.
