Summary It has been suggested that opiate dependence may be regarded as a separate dimension independent of drug‐related problems. A self‐administered multiple choice questionnaire has been developed to assess the severity of opiate dependence. In the present study the questionnaire was administered to 107 British opiate addicts. Two factors emerged from an analysis of the structure. Various measures of validity were taken and these are reported and discussed. The relationship between these findings and the results obtained from a previous study of American addicts is discussed.
