Summary In Ontario, per capita consumption of alcohol rose steadily from 1963 to 1975. Beginning in 1975, constomption stabilized and declined slightly (2.6%) to 1983. Correlational analyses of the data during the period of consumption increase demonstrated significant associations between consumption and all problem indices. During the period of consumption stabilization the linear relationships between consumption and problem indices appeared to break dozen; most of the problem indices declined more than would be expected. The possible contributions of changes in demographic factors, consumption patterns, and prevention treatment efforts to these declines are discussed.
