In this occasional series we record the views and the experience of a number of people who have specially contributed to the evolution of ideas in the Journal's field of interest. Dr Wolf Schmidt recently retired after 30 years on the research staff of the Addiction Research Foundation, Toronto. His many outstanding scientific contributions have focussed particularly on the relationship between levels of alcohol consumption and harm.
