Female Alcoholics: a controlled CT brain scan and clinical study

Summary A consecutive series of 26 female alcoholics and 41 controls were interviewed and examined with a CT brain scan. Alcoholics had greater ventricular enlargement, and widening of sulci and conical fissures than controls. These abnormalities occurred after a much shorter drinking history and at a lower peak alcohol consumption than usually reported in male alcoholics. The clinical associations of the CT scan changes are described, and the implications are discussed.
