Summary In the course of an assessment of alcohol patients undertaken as a preliminary to a study of the effects of different treatment, an unexpected finding emerged. Almost all patients seen by a psychologist as part of the study returned for a second session with a counsellor, whereas only just over half of the patients seen initially by a counsellor returned for their second appointment with that counsellor. Possible explanations are discussed.
