Summary Alcoholism and alcohol related problems are endemic in Chile, and it has been said that they are the most important Public Health problem. Some data on epidemiology of drinking problems is given, and the links between grape growing and alcohol related problems are mentioned. Finally the alcohol control policies which have been attempted over the last decade are discussed, and it is concluded that the poor success of these policies in the country is probably due to the fact that they have been limited to education, and given no attention to the control of the availability of alcohol.
