Summary A social anthropological study of the Kensington Market ‘drug scene’ is described. The social structure of this heroin black‐market is analysed with consideration of the role played by a small group of Persian dealers and their relationship with the buyers. Public health implications are considered and the relevance of these findings to current estimates of the prevalence of addiction are explored.
