Summary A survey of drinking and drug behaviour of two samples of university students was conducted, one from Britain and one Zimbabwe. Quantities and frequencies of consumption, preferred beverages and frequencies of drinking in various contexts were elicited. Comparing the samples, Zimbabwean students drank less frequently than British students but become intoxicated more often. While smoking and illicit drug use were associated in both samples, drinking was a poor predictor of these behaviours. The case for there being a deviant sub‐group who engage in all three behaviours is not supported by these data.
