Summary The Family Relations Index is a technique for describing family interaction which can provide insight for the family and the investigator into the dynamics of family behaviour and can guide intervention. The technique goes some way towards addressing the issues of complexity, subjectivity, privacy and the management of change over time which are challenges in devising methods of research with families in ‘sensitive areas’, such as alcohol abuse. The nature and requirements of the technique itself make it most suitable for clinical work and process research with small samples.
