Summary While intensive trials of purely psychological techniques in smoking cessation continue to give disappointing results, there is now good evidence that a clinically relevant specific treatment effect is obtained with appropriate use of nicotine chewing gum. The gum is in no way a panacea and should be seen as a treatment aid rather than as a complete treatment in itself. General practitioners are seen as having the major contribution to make towards smoking reduction, and their undoubted potential as motivators could be enhanced by the use of temporary nicotine substitution in dependent smokers.
