Summary The Oxford Detoxification Unit was established in 1975 as part of reorganisation within the existing services. From the outset a policy of open admission has been pursued. Referrals are accepted by telephone, limited only by bed availability. The development of the Unit is discussed in relation to other services provided for alcoholics.
