Summary The development of functional tolerance In ethanol has been studied in control mice and in mice which are physically dependent an ethanol. Physical dependence is associated with a state of submaximal functional tolerance. which can neither be increased nor reduced rapidly in response to altered tissue concentrations of the drug.
