Summary The authors make note of a speech deficit syndrome which seems to be appearing with some frequency on New York City drug detoxification units. It is suggested that this is a concomitant of changing drug use patterns and that it probably represents a release phenomenon based on methadone‐alcohol interaction in the process of withdrawal.
