The association between the use of alcoholic beverages and various forms of selfinjurious behaviour has been documented from several points of view. The following have been demonstrated: (a) a high proportion of persons who commit suicide are alcoholic (Dahlgren, 1945; N0rvig and Nielson, 1956; Ritson, 1968; Kornmaaler and Sarenson, 1970; Lester, 1972); (b) alcoholism is common among those who attempt suicide (Batchelor, 1954; Jansson, 1962; FalolaetaL, 1962; Krassner ei a/., 1973); and (c) suicidal behaviour occurs more frequently among alcoholics than in the general population, whether this behaviour takes the form of completed suicide, attempted suicide or suicidal thoughts (Glatt, 1954; 1961; Palola et al., 1962; Stenback and Blumenthal, 1964; Schmidt and de Lint, 1972; Whitehead, 1972).
