This paper makes observation as to the nature and intensity of the addictive drive. Three cases of addicts displaying physical mutilations of various sorts are described and others alluded to, wherein the addict failed to remove himself from a life‐threatening situation. The recklessness of addictive behavior and its relationship to a drive state based on biological and pharmacological principles is discussed.
