Summary Fifty‐one patients with analgesic nephropathy were studied over 3 years. Askit Powders and Codeine Co. were the main preparations they had abused, and the average amount they admitted was 6 daily for 20 years. The cause of analgesic nephropathy is dependence on analgesics, the characteristics of which include 1 A need to continue taking the analgesics. 2 A tendency to slowly increase the dose, partly owing to tolerance and partly to treat symptoms the analgesic ingestion has caused, 3 A psychic dependence which results from appreciation of the psychotropic effects of the compound analgesics. 4 Severe withdrawal effects are rare. 5 The dependence causes a characteristic “syndrome of analgesic abuse.”
