Summary A number of genetically determined characteristics have been investigated in alcoholic populations to ascertain the possibility of a genetic influence in the aetiology of alcoholism. The present study details an investigation of one such characteristic; the taste threshold of phenylthiocarbamide (P.T.C.), Although the distribution of alcoholic subjects along the taste/non‐taste continuum was significantly different than the distribution of control subjects there was no evidence that this difference was due to genetic influences.
