It was with rather more than a show of reluctance that I yielded to the persuasions of your President, my old friend and colleague, Professor Macdonald, to speak to you on this subject which for many years had been brought with increasing frequency to my notice. I felt, however, the signal honour he and your Society were doing me, it seemed rather churlish not to do what I could. I made it clear to your President that in doing so, and knowing the diversity of opinions, the many facets of the problem and the varying emotions involved, I could express only my views, and that certainly with no desire to prove myself right and others wrong. “The fool,” said Blake, “sees not the same tree as the wise man.” When he wrote that the word “fool” meant uninstructed and I suppose we can be compared with trees. The swaying poplar, the sturdy oak, the weeping willow, as well as the trembling aspen and the monkey puzzle.
