Viomycin(1,2) is one of the important antituberculous drugs. It was reported that viomycin resistance in mycobacteria occurs after multiple transfers in media containing increasing concentrations of this drug(3 4,5). The data obtained from these reports suggest that viomycin resistance in mycobacteria might have multi-step pattern like that of penicillin resistance in other bacteria(6). However, there are no reports on the systematic study made on viomycin resistance and genetic control of viomycin resistance in microorganisms. It is the purpose of this paper to report on the viomycin resistance by using M. tuberculosis as the test organism.
