An outbreak of erythema infectiosum occurred in an orphanage housing a total of 99 infants and children; 37 were affected. Attack rates were 5% in infants less than one year old, 17% in one year olds, 50% in 2 year olds, and 37% throughout the range between 0 and 5 years. According to previous reports, large outbreaks of the disease occur in elementary schools but children of preschool age are less susceptible. We observed a high attack rate in younger children. The closed situation probably permitted the intensive contact among children needed to develop this high incidence.
