In an attempt to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the migration of macrophages towards the epidermis from the dermis in pigmentary incontinence, the chemotactic activities of a horny cell membrane fraction and melanosomes were measured using a modified Boyden chamber. Horny cell membrane fraction and melanosomes showed about twice as high a chemotactic activity for macrophages than did casein. These in vitro observations suggest that, in pigmentary incontinence, migration of macrophages into the epidermis, where they phagocytize degenerated keratinocytes and melanosomes, may be one of the consecutive steps.
