The friction characteristics of hot‐pressed (α+β)‐SiAlON, versus those of bearing steel and dense Si 3 N 4 under dry sliding conditions, are reported. The coefficient of friction decreases as the alpha‐SiAlON content increases and is double that of a metal‐ceramic pair, in comparison to that of a ceramic‐ceramic pair.
