Because sodium has a tendency to form less‐durable phases during the fabrication of synroc, it is very difficult to immobilize. This study shows that synroc that contains Na 2 Al 2 Ti 6 O 16 ‐type freudenbergite can be used to incorporate sodium‐bearing high‐level radioactive waste. Synroc samples that contain 5.0 wt% Na 2 O (11.5 wt% waste oxide, accordingly) exhibit very good chemical durability and physical properties. The standard Synroc‐C formulation can incorporate only 2 wt% Na 2 O. Therefore, this study greatly improves the immobilization ability of sodium in synroc.
