The weakest‐link statistical model is used to derive an approximate relation describing the influence of oxidation or corrosion on the fracture strengths of brittle materials. Differences in strength under comparable short‐term oxidizing and nonoxidizing exposures are found to be proportional to δ m/m 2 where m is the Weibull modulus.
