The Σ5 (210)/[001] symmetric tilt grain boundary in yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) was produced by diffusion bonding precisely oriented single crystals. The crystals were cleaned and bonded in an ultra‐high‐vacuum environment. The atomic structure of the boundary was characterized by high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy. Model atomic structures were created by geometric construction to form the coincident site lattice model boundary. Comparison of model structures with high‐resolution micrographs was performed by high‐resolution image simulation. Many aspects of the boundary structure were properly represented by the models, but some details of the high‐resolution images indicated that differences existed.
